Record Turnout, A New Mayor & Big Decisions Ahead

Tuesday’s election brought historic results and a clear message from voters. We congratulate Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and all newly elected leaders who will play a role in shaping what comes next.

What Happened:

  • Zohran Mamdani won election as our next mayor. Defeating Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa, he is New York’s first Muslim mayor and, at 34, its youngest in more than 100 years.

  • Turnout broke records. More than 2 million New Yorkers voted, the highest turnout in a mayoral race since 1969. More than 735,000 residents voted early, driven by historic youth participation.

  • Voters approved housing reforms. Ballot proposals to speed up affordable housing development and reduce bureaucratic delays passed, a promising step toward solving the housing crisis.

  • Down-ballot, Mark Levine was elected Comptroller, Jumaane Williams was re-elected Public Advocate, and borough presidents and district attorneys were also selected across the five boroughs.

Looking to the Future: The incoming administration has opportunities to advance practical solutions backed by a strong coalition of voters, employers, and civic leaders.

  • Housing Supply: New Yorkers approved reforms to move housing projects faster. Now City Hall must follow through by partnering with the private and nonprofit sectors to deliver results.

  • Regulatory Reform: Streamlining outdated regulations, from scaffolding to permitting, can cut costs without compromising safety.

  • Child Care Access: Expanding affordable child care helps working families, attracts talent, and strengthens New York’s competitiveness. This is one of the clearest ways to support both social equity and economic growth.

  • Public Safety: Mayor-elect Mamdani’s promise to retain Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reflects the broad consensus that safety is essential to the city’s recovery. Her leadership has earned credibility with communities, employers, and police officers alike.

These aren’t partisan issues. They’re real-world challenges with commonsense solutions — and they’re central to keeping New York a magnet for talent and a generator of economic opportunity.

This election showed New Yorkers are more engaged than ever in shaping the future of the city. But voting is only the beginning. The next test is whether New Yorkers will advocate for the policy changes needed to bring real progress in the form of more affordable housing, childcare, and energy, as well as ongoing commitments to public safety.

New York is the greatest city in the world. That’s not just something we believe. It’s something we prove together by setting high standards and holding ourselves and our leaders accountable.

Over the next few weeks, Mayor-elect Mamdani will begin assembling his administration, selecting the people who will lead city agencies and carry out his agenda. These early decisions can have a big impact on issues like housing, public safety, and affordability. We’ll be watching closely and sharing updates. In the meantime, you can watch his message to New Yorkers.
