Turns Out, Congestion Pricing Works
The results are in: congestion pricing is working.
The policy has only been in effect for a few months, and we’re already seeing the transformative changes it’s bringing about: Less traffic, faster commutes, safer streets, and less pollution. All while laying the foundation to generate $15 billion for critical transit upgrades that will finally improve our subways and our quality of life.
Here’s what’s changed since congestion pricing began:
🚗 76,000 fewer vehicles entering the zone daily
🚦 Average traffic speeds up 5.7%, with faster peak commutes
🚑 14% drop in crashes with injuries
🚇 Transit ridership up: buses (+13%), subways (+8.2%), LIRR (+11%), Metro-North (+8.2%)
🚕 More yellow taxi and Citi Bike trips
🎒 Fewer school bus delays and more time in class
🅿️ Fewer parking violations and noise complaints
🌱 Air quality data pending; to date, 265 zero-emission electric buses have been funded by the program
💰 $45 million raised in March, on pace for $500 million this year
Despite these indisputably positive impacts, the program now faces a serious threat. The Trump administration is challenging its implementation, putting federal approvals and funding for critical transportation projects in our city at risk.
Governor Hochul and the MTA have affirmed the program’s legal foundation and its proven benefits. But with legal challenges ongoing, strong public support is essential. Now is the time to stay informed and ready to stand up for a safer, faster, and more livable New York.
