Why Small Donations Have an Especially Big Impact in NYC Elections

What if your $10 donation could tip the scales in a City Council race?

In New York City, it just might. That’s thanks to the city’s Public Matching Funds Program, which turns small contributions from everyday people into real political power.

How it Works: New York launched the program in 1988 to limit big money in city elections. It matches the first $250 of a qualifying donation at an 8-to-1 rate. $10 becomes $90. $100 becomes $900.

Candidates qualify by showing grassroots support and agreeing to spending limits. Once approved, they receive public funds to campaign, allowing them to focus on voters instead of fundraisers.

“The matching funds program makes it easier for everyday New Yorkers—teachers, small business owners, and community leaders—to mount credible campaigns.”

– Paul S. Ryan, Executive Director, NYC Campaign Finance Board

This year’s primary election will take place on June 24, and it’s not too late to donate to a candidate you believe in. Here’s the full list of candidates who qualify to receive public matching funds.
